Corda's Castle in the Dark Peak

In the Dark Peak, Curbar Edge is an iconic gritstone escarpment that lies above the ancient village of Curbar in the Peak District. The name Curbar (and several other names derived similarly) all have the same meaning, 'Cordas fortified place'. What strange imaginings and scenes this does conjure .. Who was Corda? What was his or her fortification protecting, and from whom? Sitting up there, looking outward on a beautiful day such as this, it's impossible to imagine the terrible hoards rushing across the Hope Valley towards battle. Or is it? What dread and fear those within the palisade must have felt.
