It's one of the things I love about the English landscape amongst, I have to admit, many others. The fields are enclosed by fences and walls divided up and apportioned by farmers and landowners generations ago. Here in the Peak District and the Derbyshire Dales the walls are the local limestone. Handmade and maintained by folk hardier than I and they help to define the iconic patchworks that are so recognisable in this glorious landscape.
