A Prima Vista

I rarely plan a painting in the way that other artists might. I start with an idea; it’s often part of a series, and I might have been sparked into action by one of my own photographs. Thereafter, it’s me, the easel and a palette of colours. I then feel my way into the scene.
A Prima Vista glows. The title, which translates as "at first sight" or "sight-reading" in musical terms, adds a tension between the spontaneity of the moment and the skill of colour choice and brushwork. I’m trying to catch something bright and alive as the painting unfolds.
